But in much of African philosophy, the idea of Ubuntu offers a different view: A person becomes a person through other people. Is identity individual — or communal? Would Western societies benefit from a more relational model? Can capitalism and community coexist? This week’s discussion explores the balance between individual freedom and collective responsibility, and what we might learn from cultures that place relationships at the center of human life.
