Oaxaca has a surprisingly rich cultural scene that costs nothing. Free concerts at the Zócalo, free museum days, galleries, open-air markets, and community events — there's always something to do without spending a peso.
Answers to the most common questions about free activities and no-cost events in Oaxaca.
Oaxaca has an impressive amount of free activities: the Zócalo hosts free concerts and events regularly, the Textile Museum offers free admission, the pedestrian street Macedonio Alcalá is lined with free galleries, and many neighborhoods have weekend street markets. The Ethnobotanical Garden charges a small fee but is very affordable.
Yes. The Textile Museum of Oaxaca is permanently free. The Centro Fotográfico Manuel Álvarez Bravo has free photography exhibitions. The Museum of Oaxacan Cultures (in the Santo Domingo ex-convent) is free on Sundays for Mexican nationals. IAGO (the Graphic Arts Institute) charges a nominal cooperative fee.
Yes — the first Sunday of every month, Monte Albán (and all INAH sites in Mexico) offer free admission for Mexican nationals presenting a valid national ID (INE). International tourists always pay the regular fee. Arrive early on those Sundays as it gets crowded.
Frequently. The State Band of Oaxaca performs free concerts at the Zócalo most weekends. IAGO and other cultural institutions organize free cultural events throughout the year. The Guelaguetza's open-seating sections at the top of Cerro del Fortín are free (limited capacity — arrive 2-3 hours early).
On Sundays: first-Sunday-of-the-month means free entry to Monte Albán and other INAH sites. The Zócalo has Sunday morning events. Many galleries and the Textile Museum are free. The Sunday market in Tlacolula (about 30km away, one of the largest indigenous markets in Mexico) is free to browse.
This page lists confirmed free events updated every hour. You can also follow @queondaoaxaca on Instagram for weekly highlights. Many free events are also listed in the community bulletin boards at the Zócalo and cultural centers around the city.
