Saturday, June 13 — Sunday, June 14
Oaxaca is at its best on weekends: the Mercado de Abastos at full capacity, live music spilling out of mezcal bars on Murguía Street, spontaneous comparsas on the Zócalo, and the valleys opening up for day trips. This is the updated agenda plus the plans that define an Oaxacan weekend.
Frequently asked questions from travelers about Saturday and Sunday plans, day trips, mezcal bars and how to make the most of a weekend in Oaxaca.
Saturday is Oaxaca's best day: start early at Mercado de Abastos (the city's biggest market, open from 5am), then walk the historic center — Macedonio Alcalá walkway, Santo Domingo church, and the Ethnobotanical Garden. Afternoon mezcal on Calle Murguía. Saturday night concentrates the most concerts, DJ sets, and cultural events — check the calendar above to see what's on this week.
Sunday in Oaxaca has its own rhythm. On the first Sunday of each month, Monte Albán has free entry for Mexican national ID holders. The Zócalo usually has community activities. The Benito Juárez Market is ideal for breakfast — tlayuda, tasajo, and chocolate. Afternoons are great for the artisan valleys: Teotitlán del Valle (Zapotec rugs), San Bartolo Coyotepec (black clay pottery), or Atzompa (green pottery). Take a colectivo from the Central de Abastos.
In Situ (Murguía 511) is the definitive cantina with 40+ producers. Los Amantes has a rooftop overlooking the center. Mezcalogia (Constitución 114) is excellent for comparing artisanal distillates. El Destilado (5 de Mayo 409) pairs mezcal with a serious kitchen. On Friday and Saturday nights, Murguía Street and the streets around the Andador concentrate nightlife with live music into the early hours.
Monte Albán (9km, Zapotec archaeological site, free first Sunday for national IDs), Hierve el Agua (70km, stunning natural petrified waterfalls and mineral pools — budget a full day), Teotitlán del Valle (30km, Zapotec village with the finest rugs in Oaxaca), Mitla (44km, archaeological site with the most intricate stone mosaics in Mesoamerica), Atzompa (8km, green glazed pottery). All reachable by taxi colectivo from Central de Abastos or private taxi.
It varies widely. Budget (hostel + market food + free events): 700–1,200 MXN per person per day. Comfortable (mid-range hotel + neighborhood restaurants): 2,500–4,500 MXN per person for the weekend. Boutique hotel + restaurant dining: 6,000–14,000+ MXN per person. Many cultural activities — the Zócalo concerts, the historic center walk, Jalatlaco neighborhood — cost nothing.
Yes, many. The Zócalo hosts free concerts and community events almost every weekend. The Textile Museum of Oaxaca has free admission. The Ethnobotanical Garden has a reduced-rate guided tour. The Tianguis Cultural del Llano (Fridays and Saturdays) is a free artisan and music market at Parque El Llano. First Sunday of the month: Monte Albán and Mitla are free for national ID holders. And simply wandering Jalatlaco or the historic center — a UNESCO World Heritage site — costs nothing at all.
