Puerto Escondido is more than surf. A growing cultural scene, mezcal bars with Pacific views, beachside events, yoga festivals, and a community of locals and digital nomads that organizes events most weekends.
Frequently asked questions from travelers about things to do in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca.
Puerto Escondido is famous for surfing at Zicatela Beach (one of the world's most powerful waves), but there's much more: snorkeling at Playa Manzanillo, sunset kayaking, turtle watching in season, mezcal bars with ocean views at La Punta, fresh seafood at the coastal Zócalo, and a growing nightlife scene.
Zicatela is for advanced surfers only — the Mexican Pipeline is extremely powerful and dangerous for beginners. Beginners should go to Playa Carrizalillo or Playa La Punta, where the waves are much gentler. Many surf schools offer lessons for all levels. Always check conditions with local instructors before entering the water.
La Punta and the Zócalo area are the main nightlife hubs. Expect beach bars with hammocks, reggae and cumbia, some electronic nights on weekends, and mezcalerías with Pacific views. The vibe is relaxed and bohemian — not Cancún-style clubs, but authentic local bars that stay lively until late.
About 240 km, which takes 5-6 hours by car on the free mountain road or 7-8 hours on the toll road via Tehuantepec. There are also small planes (Aerotucán) between Oaxaca City airport and Puerto Escondido. Many travelers take the overnight bus to save daytime hours.
November to April is the dry season — sunny days, calmer seas, great for snorkeling. May to October brings bigger waves (better for experienced surfers) and some rain. Sea turtle nesting season is July-December, with peak releases in September-October at nearby La Ventanilla and Mazunte.
